ATHLETES AND POLITICS : A RELEVANT MIX

LVPI President Joey Romasanta insists that players must not involve themselves in sports politics. I say otherwise.

Players must get involved in sports politics to know what is truly going on in their sport. Being involved in politics imparts knowledge to the player about the situation. Ultimately, being involved in sports politics enables a player to make an intelligent decision when the situation calls for it.

In the current volleyball crisis, Ateneo players are being herded like cows to the slaughterhouse because they remain unaware of the intricacies of the situation. They refuse to examine the facts on hand and merely rely and trust their sports leaders to do the right thing. Sadly, these sports leaders are simply out to serve their selfish interests than promote the welfare of their players. Thus, Ateneo players remain with the wrong group of people and could suffer dire consequences.

It is really best for Ateneo, as well as San Sebastian and NU players, to really get involved and be informed. It is best for the players to look out for themselves and not merely rely on the their sports officials. After all, they, the players, are ones who suffer most when sports leaders engage in politics.
