BOYCOTT LA SALLE, ADMU AND NU WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TEAMS

So it is official. La Salle, Ateneo and NU have not allowed their top players to join the Philippine volleyball team. Alyssa Valdez, Dindin and Jaja Santiago and Mika Reyes have not been allowed by their respective schools to join the Philippine team that is scheduled to compete in Thailand for the Asian  Senior Women's Championship.

I am so disappointed that these schools refuse to loan their top players for the national team. I consider it an insult to the Filipino people for these schools to deny the country of its best players in an international competition. I am at a loss for words on how these schools can flatly reject the call to serve one's country through sports.

I am also perplexed as to why these schools would rather have their top players play in UAAP or Shakey's VLeague rather than the Asian Senior Women's Championship. There is hardly any prestige in winning in UAAP or Shakey's VLeague. But winning in the Asian Championship is definitely a huge honor for the players and the entire country. So why the ridiculous priority on local tournaments ?

As long as these schools continue to be selfish with their players, Philippine women's volleyball will go nowhere. Philippine volleyball will remain down in the dumps as long as these schools remain selfish. In the meantime, as these schools go on with their selfish ways, the fans will do well to boycott the teams of these schools. It is time to strike back. It is time to right a wrong.

    1. Are you considering the fact that they have responsibilities as students? I would be happy to see, for example, Alyssa Valdez graduate from college rather than being kicked out from Ateneo because she is PRESSURED to join the National Team. Yes, sports bring glory to the country, but education is their main priority. They're STUDENT-ATHLETES, after all. So don't be selfish with your thoughts.

      Just my thoughts though.

  2. i believe these kids are students first, before athletes. if the schools think that it is in the best interest of the student-athlete not to join the rp team, then let us respect that decision. at the end of the day, there are still a lot of talent out there. it is disrespectful to the current line up to wish someone else was in their place, as if they can not win that championship without the 4 girls. i am all out for philippine volleyball, heck, i am all heart for all philippine sports programs. but at the end of the day, education will have to be prioritized over whatever prestige a championship will bring. as a filipino, i'd prefer having college graduates (who really graduated, without special favors or what have you) rather than sports champions. and after their schooling, they will have their turn at the national team.

    just my thoughts.

  3. Uhm, haven't you considered that these athletes are students too? That competing abroad will compromise their studies which, I think, should be their top priority? I would have agreed with you if you're calling for the boycott of Philippine Army and Air Force since I see no reason why they would not be willing to lend (not loan, strictly speaking) their players. But these schools have a legitimate reason to decline such request.

  6. i dont think the schools are selfish! I think they have their own reasons kung bakit di pinayagan..

  7. Before you say anything, have you thought of the state of volleyball here in the Philippines?

  8. For me, it's a lame reason for you to encourage the fans to boycott these universities. Aren't you considering the lineup provided? Aren't they the top players of our country? Are the fans are just relying on the skills of the players you've mention? I don't think so. And also, why don't you consider the reasons of these schools for not allowing their players to join the team? I know there's a good reason and we should respect their decison. I believe that the best thing to do is to SUPPORT, TRUST and hope for the BEST for our country. #oneforthecountry

  12. Just my two cents' on why the aforementioned players were disallowed.

All of them are student-athletes; note that "student" comes before "athlete". Their priority is their academics not sports.

How long will they be gone if they represent the country abroad? Two weeks? That's two weeks of missing classes, not passing requirements, foregoing quizzes and papers which can adversely affect their grades.

Poor grades can jeopardize their chances of playing in the UAAP.

  13. TANGA. BOBO.

Eh sina Valdez, Santiago sisters and mga La Salle players, they're STUDENT-ATHLETE's. May studies pa sila.

  14. as selfish as it may, these players are student-athletes.the schools are just concerned abt the academics of these girls and these students have to prioritize their studies. u don't even know how busy they are, esp for those graduating students who are working their Ass off on their theses and exams. just imagine how many classes they will miss if they have to attend their training for the int'l games.. they're not superwomen.. for me, these schools are doing the right thing.

  15. Sir, in my opinion, your nationalistic view on sports is the "wrong thing" that must be corrected. First of all, have you ever asked your self why defend nationalism as a value in this age? You go as far as saying we should boycott their games simply because they couldn't suit up for the national team?

These are kids who have trained all their lives to play the sport, I ask you, what do they owe the nation? It is, after all, their individual schools which have spent so much training them. Do you credit their individual calibers to the national budget? Did they ever use tax payers' money to improve themselves? So tell me sir, what do they owe the nation? Just because they happened to be "Filipinos"?

Second, it is not as if these schools have not loaned them in past tournaments. The most recent Asian Tournament they joined was coached by Roger Gorayeb, and some of these players you mentioned were in the team.

Third, it is as if you're blaming the school for the dismal state of Philippine Volleyball. Winning does not come from an overnight training and gathering of superb players. It takes time. The Azkals know that. Gilas players and the team know that. To imply that Philippine Volleyball loses because of individualistic tendencies of schools is simply irrational; you place unwarranted expectations to these players.

Lastly, I think it is nationalism that is selfish. You thrive at the cost of these players. When they perform, and do well, it is as if you are the ones winning. And after the performance, you feel gratified and victorious, but you don't care anymore about the welfare of these players. You no longer care whether they are replaced or not; whether they're injured or not. You only care about the individual momentary euphoria you feel every time we score a goal, win a set, or win a game. So I think nationalism is rooted in selfishness.

If we truly care about the "nation", then I think we should care about the individual members of this "nation". Look at the players along with your individual welfare.

  16. Kung sino mn nag blog nito, isip din pag may free time. Their STUDET-athlete. STUDENT FIRST BEFORE ATHLETE.

  18. You get what you give. You write negative things about others, you get negative feedback from others as well.

This guy has bashed a lot of credible people and institutions already. You should scan through his blog so that you will not fall into his trap. He is a troublemaker. And he claims himself to be a "christian". C'mon. He is misrepresenting the religion. He is not credible and unpopular; not a writer, only a person who is fond of giving opinions to the extent of brain-washing feeble-minded readers.

  19. The parents of these STUDENT-ATHLETES are paying HUGE amount of money for the education of their children... Not for the honor of their country full of corrupt officials... And what recognition our athletes get anyway..? NOTHING..! SO WHY BOTHER..? WHY WOULD THEY WASTE THEIR TIME..?
