EGYPT : FROM PEACEFUL REVOLUTION TO VIOLENT CLASHES

What started as an amazing and peaceful display of solidarity, violent clashes now mark Egypt's revolution. After Hosni Mubarak delivered a speech on Egyptian television declaring his intention not to run in the coming elections, pro-Mubarak forces started to march towards Tahrir Square. In minutes, anti- and pro-Mubarak forces faced each other and engaged in violent confrontations in and around Cairo.
Obviously, the pro-Mubarak forces are part of Mubarak's efforts to derail the anti-government demonstrations. Several pro-Mubarak demonstrators were revealed to be part of the police force which Mubarak controls. What is ominous about the whole scenario is that Mubarak might just take advantage of the situation to stop all anti-government rallies. The violence that has erupted could justify a crackdown on all anti-Mubarak demonstrations.
Friday will be a crucial day for Egypt as millions are set to march to the presidential palace to demand, once and for all, the resignation of Mubarak. I just pray that violence will not erupt and that the people's true will and sentiments prevail.
