The whole country is in high spirits once again as Manny Pacquiao stamped his class over Margarito. Pacquiao outclassed and outfought Margarito to win his 8th world title.
Sadly, lost in Pacquiao's victory and the frenzy among Filipinos are the losses of the Philippines in the opening day of the Asian Games. The Filipinos lost all their bouts in judo and billiards and failed miserably in cycling, shooting, dance sport and swimming. Only tennis players Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey saved the Philippine campaign with a pair of victories. The Philippine basketball team escaped with a victory over lowly - rated Kuwait. The team will go up against Asian Olympic qualifier Iran in its next assignment.
Sports officials of the country must be held responsible for the sad state of sports in general. They cannot hide behind the success of Manny Pacquiao. After all, they have little to do with what Manny Pacquiao has achieved and continues to achieve. It seems that sports officials of the land are not designing programs that will improve the performances of local athletes in international competitions. The defeats at the Asian Games are just too many to simply hide and overlook.
