The Philippine Volleyball Federation has spoken. It will conduct a series of try-outs for a women's national team to be sent to Thailand for the 17th Asian Seniors Women's Championships. With this development, the initial step in forming a national team has been made.
But will this finally lead to an actual formation of a national volleyball women's team ? Sadly, I don't think so. For one, the best players must make an effort to try-out and commit to the national team. Two, people like Ricky Palou and Tats Suzara must allow their players to try-out and participate in tournaments that PVF will line up for the national team. Three, universities and colleges must allow their students to be a part of the national team. Fourth, sponsors must come in to provide financial support to the team. And lastly, POC and PSC will do well to mind their own business and not interfere with PVF.
While PVF is heading towards the right direction, several people and institutions are still needed to make the national women's volleyball team a reality. I seriously doubt that we , as a nation and people, can unite to make certain dreams possible. After all, the root cause of the problem in volleyball are the selfish motives of people who claim to love the sport. The problems persist because people refuse to work as one. We simply do not know the concept of a team.
