The 4th season of the Laguna Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (LACUAA) Games kicked off with a grand parade of participating schools and universities at the UPLB Grandstand last September 10, 2016. Led by a marching band, the schools and their respective teams paraded in their splendid uniforms around the sprawling Los Banos campus. The parade ended at Copeland Gymnasium where a short program was presented by this year's host, UPLB. UPLB Sports Recreation Committee Chairman Vernon Velasco delivered the welcome address. Dra. Monette Bato, Vice-President for Administration of Laguna Unversity, delivered the inspirational message in behalf of Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez. The program was kept lively by the superb performances of UPLB Cheerdance Team, UPLB Street Jazz Dance Company and UPLB Filipiniana Dance Troupe. The entire program was engaging as Prof. Naomi Enriquez put in a good show as master of ceremony.
After the program, a torch was lit to signal the start of the games. Games in basketball and volleyball drew first blood. The first basketball game featured UPLB against Trace College in the college division. The game was hotly contested, with no team leading by more than 6 points. In the end, Trace College defeated UPLB, 83-77. In the second match for basketball, Trace College scored a lopsided win over Calamba Institue in the high school division.
In volleyball, UPLB scored double victories over Trace College in the college division. UPLB posted a win in the women's division over Trace College in 4 sets. UPLB men's volleyball team then demolished defending champion Trace College with a 3 set sweep.
All the games during the first day of competition showed just how competitive the teams have become through the years. Indeed, the 4th season of LACUAA promises to be its most exciting yet. (photos by Henry Vargas)
