ANG BAP AT PVF

Kapwa nadiskaril ang Basketball Asssociation of the Philippines (BAP) at Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) sa kagagawan ng Philippne Olympic Committee (POC). Subalit magkaiba ng tinatahak na landas ang dalawa nang ang mga ito ay guluhin at tuluyang sirain ng POC.

Dumating ang BAP sa punto na walang ipinapahiram na players ang PBA para sa pmbansang koponan. Kaya naman, nagkaroon ng panahon na sadyang tumamlay ang kampanya ng Pilipinas sa basketball sa mga torneo sa ibang bansa. Dumating pa sa punto na natalo ang pambansang koponan sa koponan ni Anjo Yllana.  Bagamat natalo ang pambansang koponan dahil nawala ang coach nito sa kalagitnaan ng laro, ginawa itong dahilan ng POC para sibakin at tuluyang di kilalanin ang BAP. At dito na pumasok ang Samahang Baketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) sa pangunguna ni Manny V. Pangilinan.

Sa pagpasok ng SBP, nagkaroon ng Gilas program ang basketball sa Pilipinas. Kinuha si Coach Raijo Toroman upang isagawa ang programa. Muling nakuha ng SBP ang pinakamagagaling na manlalaro ng bansa. At umabot nga sa FIBA World Cup ang Pilipinas kung saan nagpakitang - gilas ang pambansang koponan na sadyang ikinagulat ng buong mundo.

Kabaliktaran naman ang nangyari sa volleyball. Diniskaril ang PVF nang makabuo ito ng Pilipinas Amihan at Bagwis na binubuo ng pinakamagagaling na balibolista ng bansa. Nanghimasok ang POC nang makabuo ng five-year national team program ang PVF na pinondohan pa ng PLDT Home Ultera at SM Group of Companies.

Sa pagpasok ng Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. (LVPI) bilang bagong NSA para sa volleyball, biglang nawala ang programa sa national tam. Nawala rin ang mga pambansang koponan. Pahirapan pa ngayon ang makabuo ng koponan na ipapadala sa mga torneo sa ibang bansa dahil sa di pagkakasundo ng grupo nina Suzara at Palou.

Ayon sa isang opistal ng PVF, walang kaso na palitan ng LVVPI ang PVF kung ito naman ay para sa ikakaganda at ikauunlad ng volleyball sa Pilipinas. Ang tanong, gumanda at umunlad nga ba ang volleyball sa Pilipinas nang palitan ng LVPI ang PVF ?

Sadyang masalimuot ang nangyari sa BAP at PVF sa pakikialam at kagagawan ng POC.

Dear Readers,

The Gold Medal wishes to make a survey of who you think are the 12 male and 12 female greatest Filipino volleyball players of all-time. Players from 1912 to the present are eligible to be in the list. The criteria for judging the greatest Filipino volleyball players include :

1. Number of years as a national player (40%)

2. Medals won as a national player (10%)

3. Contribution to Philippine volleyball (30%)

4. Impact on Philippine volleyball (20%)

The players will be ranked according to the criteria above. Only the top 12 female and top 12 male volleyball players will make the list.

The final result of the survey will be included in a book devoted to Philippine volleyball.

PSC MUST GET RID OF POC PRESIDENT PEPING COJUANGCO

The biggest problem of Philippine sports is, without a doubt, POC President Peping Cojuangco. Sports governance, the Peping Cojuangco way, is by far, the biggest deterrent to growth of Philippine sports. One simply has to take a look at the way the POC president destroyed Philippine Dragon Boat Federation (PDBF) and Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) to realize that he is indeed the purveyor of destruction in Philippine sports.

With the gross mismanagement and misgovernance in sports, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) must take drastic steps to prevent POC President Peping Cojuangco from winning a fourth term. PSC Chairman Butch Ramirez must first talk to the POC president and request him to give way to young and vibrant leadership. Should the POC president refuse his request, the chairman can then tell the NSA's who will vote for Cojuangco that they will have a hard time securing funds should they insist on voting for Cojuangco.

It is time for PSC to flex its muscle to show who is the boss. Drastic times, after all, call for drastic action. For PSC to resuscitate Philippine sports, Peping Cojuangco must go. It is really that plain and simple.

GILAS PILIPINAS 2016 AND THE ROAD TO RIO

Gilas Pilipinas starts its Olympic bid with a game against powerhouse Team France on Tuesday, July 5, 2016. Team France is bannered by NBA superstars Tony Parker and Boris Diaw and is ranked 5th in the world. After Team France, Gilas Pilipinas will meet New Zealand the following day.

For Gilas to advance to the next round, it has to beat either France or New Zealand. Beating France will be a tall order for Gilas. New Zealand, ranked 27th in the world, is more conquerable as far as Gilas is concerned. After all, Gilas is ranked 33rd in the world.

But Gilas will have the home court advantage which could spell the big difference in the qualifier. With the crowd solidly behind Gilas, beating New Zealand may not be as impossible as what a lot of people think. As long as Coach Baldwin does not allow Andray Blatch to hold on to the ball all the time and take more than his fair share of attempts, Gilas will have a fighting chance..
