2011 MISS UNIVERSE : MISS PHILIPPINES AT HER BEST

Miss Philippines, Chancey Supsup, did the country proud by performing well at the Miss Universe Pageant. From the swimsuit to the evening gown competitions, Miss Philippines showed the whole world that she can compete with the best. In the final question and answer portion, Supsup brilliantly articulated the Filipinos' concept of faith and God. Unfortunately, she merely ended up third-runner up.

But whether she ended up last or Miss Universe, for me, is irrelevant. The fact that she gave her best in the pageant and presented herself as a true Filipino make her, for me, a winner. At times when Filipinos are ashamed to be Filipinos, Miss Philippines dared to be in her true native form. That is, an intelligent full-bloodied Filipino who places God above all else.

It puzzles me a bit that people are dissatisfied with the results. Perhaps, people in Manila expected her to win the crown with her brilliant answer. But beauty is relative. What I think Filipinos must learn is to see their beauty in their own terms. That Filipinos need not validate their beauty with the approval of others. If Filipinos learn to define true beauty in their own terms, they will discover that they belong truly belong to a beautiful race. As Descartes aptly puts it, " I think, therefore I am. "
